Red Wing School Board: Some parents want referendum vote to be taken in September

A small but united group of parents would like to see a referendum vote take place in September.

A small but united group of parents would like to see a referendum vote take place in September.

Whether Red Wing School Board members accept the recommendation remains to be seen, though the panel is expected to decide at its March 17 meeting.

Board members have been mulling when to hold the referendum vote for weeks now, though the parents’ recommendation may have been influential, School Board Chairman Paul Kramp said.

“That’s what this board is leaning to,” he said of a possible September vote.

School Board member Tim Kelly reiterated his stance Monday that the vote should occur at the Nov. 4 general election. Supporters of the November date say greater turnout could provide a more representative cross-section of the public.

School Board members also have yet to set a dollar amount for the referendum, saying the state’s financial predicament obscures local projections.
