Letter: Gas tax will pay for itself in safety

To the Editor:
What has happened to our democracy when people are punished for voting the way their conscience tells them to? Very few laws in this country would have been passed if there had not been crossover between parties.
Many of us say we vote for the person, not the party. We hope that the person we elect from any party will represent us and what is good for us.
Didn’t the governor and his loyal supporters notice the bridge collages? Haven’t they seen pictures of the Hastings bridge and other bridges?
Whatever tax we have to pay will more than pay for itself in safety, peace of mind, and not having to spend our money on costly car repairs. I am thankful there are six brave men and women, who were more concerned about the people in their state than the honors their party could heap on them, and were willing to give that all up to help the people of the state as a whole.
What kind of state do we live in where people vote for what they know is right and are sanctioned for it? Safe roads should not be a partisan issue.
