Looking back: Foot Tannery was booming

The Red Wing Republican Eagle and former Editor Phil Duff were presented with an award for imaginative world news coverage by the Minnesota Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. Duff also was co-owner of the local newspaper.

The upper floors of Koehler Book and Stationery store will be converted to 15 condominium units. The contractor has tenants already lined up.

The Red Wing Airport could become a National Weather Service reporting station, according to Engineer Bob Anderson, who indicated the Department of Aeronautics was interested.

50 years ago: 1958

Officials of Red Wing Potteries said the response to the new patterns this year was better than in previous years.

Goodhue County will appear in the Statehood Parade as Minnesota’s “Father of Public Health.” The float will dramatize the role Dr. Charles Hewitt of early Red Wing played in pioneering Minnesota’s public health movement.

James Enz, celebrating his 90th birthday, recalled that his earliest memory of Red Wing was going to the Remmler brewery, where Nelson’s Super Valu stands, to get spring water for his father.

100 years ago: 1908

S.B. Foot and Co. has plans to enlarge its tannery in the near future and employ an increased number of men.

The new Red Wing City Hospital building was approaching completion. Total cost was $15,000 for a fireproof hospital with every modern convenience.

Horses are fast coming into demand again, and a consignment sale of horses will be held at Perkins’ livery barn on Plum Street.
