Both the Ellsworth and Prescott St. Croix Valley League ballclubs were winners Sunday in their respective regional final games, leading them to the Wisconsin Baseball Association State Tournament this weekend in Osseo.
Ellsworth dethroned defending champion River Falls 5-4 Sunday at Okey Park in Osceola. J.P. Paulson down-to-the-last strike home run tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. The Hubbers won in the 10th when Lance Murphy drew a bases loaded walk.
Prescott, meanwhile, downed Hayward 8-3 at Hayward. Chris Terrazas hit a clutch two out hit to plate Billy Brookshaw to tie the score at 3-3. The Pirates went up 5-3 in the seventh as Jared Powell and Dillow Powell each homered. Up 6-3 in the eighth, Nick Johnson hit a two run double that sealed the deal.
Prescott plays Chaseburg-Coon Valley Friday at 9 p.m. at Merchant's Park in Osseo. Ellsworth plays Saturday at 1 p.m. against Everest. If Prescott wins they play again Saturday at 4 p.m. while if Ellsworth they play again at 7 p.m. The championship game is Sunday at noon.
Half of the WBA state field comes from the SCVL. Osceola plays Menomonie at 10 a.m. Saturday. The other state game has Whittlesey vs. the Haugen Knights at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
