Letter: Drug court could make difference

To the Editor:

I am writing to support Judge Bibus’ request for consideration of a Goodhue County drug court

(R-E, Jan. 19).

The latest in neuroscience now substantiates that learning and lasting behavioral change is far more complex than reward and punishment. We now know that there are so many other factors to take into consideration, especially when you are talking about substance abuse behavior.

I have seen drug court in action. It holds the defendant accountable for his/her actions, but it also teaches skills for a new and lasting lifestyle change.

Change is not easy for any of us, but life has changed in this and other small towns; small towns are dealing with big global issues. Drug court offers a new possibility in approaching a complex problem.
