To the Editor:

This Monday marks the fourth annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in Red Wing. Although previous events have been a great success, this year’s celebration will represent a marked departure from the prior three. The theme is “Raise Your Voices” and the focus is on musical and artistic expressions honoring Rev. King.

Otis Zanders and his staff at the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Red Wing have graciously offered to host the event, which will feature the Correctional Facility Choir, Soul of Red Wing; the Ovation high school choir; First United Methodist Choir, Red Wing Singers and other local artists.

This is a unique opportunity for collaboration between the correctional facility and the community. This event will not only celebrate the life and goals of King, it will also serve to include the residents of the correctional facility in a positive community experience. I am very excited about this event, and I am looking forward to a fun evening of music and camaraderie.

I encourage everyone to attend and to arrive early. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 6. Because the correctional facility is a secure building, cell phones, cameras and tobacco products should be left in your vehicle.

Come listen to these wonderful musical groups as they raise their voices in honor of one our country’s greatest heroes.
