EHS sends three to semis, one to placing matches

MADISON - After a poor first day of the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, at least half of Friday has gone much better for Ellsworth.

The Panthers advanced three grapplers to this evening's semifinal round in the Kohl Center and has has ensured themselves of at least four wrestlers who will place in this year's state meet.

Defending champs Jens Lantz and Roarke Langer were winners in their respective quarterfinal matches. Lantz pinned Lodi's John Joutras, a wrestler with 45 wins, in 5:00 at 113 pounds in Division 2 while Langer methodically beat up Sparta's Derek Von Ruden, also a 45-match winner, at 132 by an 8-1 score after a scoreless first period.

Speaking of beat up that's exactly what Parker Hines did to Luxemburg-Casco's Ethan Peters. Hines, a state runner-up double-legged takedowned his way to a 22-7 technical fall in 4:04 at 195.

Tonight's semifinal match-ups have Lantz facing Oconto Falls's Matt Damp (Sr. 40-2); Langer takes on Seymour's Mark Dessart (Sr. 42-3) and Hines takes on Mike Watters of Lodi (Sr. 44-3).

Ellsworth senior Brent Stockwell will make the awards podium as well. After losing in the quarterfinals 7-0 to Wrightstown's Brett Buechler at 126, he came back to win 19-7 over Spooner's Denver Quenette. He will wrestling in the placing matches Saturday morning.
