MAIDEN ROCK - A 16-year-old Ellsworth boy died Sunday afternoon after he apparently lost control of his vehicle and it rolled onto its top in the Rush River near Maiden Rock, pinning him inside.
Authorities identified the driver as Blake Flanigan.
The vehicle was discovered by a passerby at 3:27 p.m., lying on its top, partially submerged in the river, just off County Road A at 385th Street in the town of Salem.
Investigation by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department indicated Flanigan had been traveling south on County Road A when his vehicle partially left the road on a curve and entered the west ditch. He apparently drove it back onto the road where it crossed into the northbound lane, entered the east ditch, descended the embankment and overturned in the river.
When rescuers righted the vehicle, Flanigan's body was discovered inside, according to a press release prepared by deputy Jean Spletstoser.
Assisting deputies were firefighters and paramedics from Ellsworth, members of the Maiden Rock/Plum City/Stockholm Area Ambulance, the Pierce County Medical Examiner's office and a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warden.
The crash remains under investigation.
