Male singers wanted

Red Wing High School Choir Director Scott Perau (second from right) is starting a men's chorus group for men ages 14 and older starting in June. Perau, seen here with the barbershop quartet Chord Smash!, said the group as well as the new chorus will perform at concert July 26 at First United Methodist Church. Submitted photo

Scott Perau has sung with some of the best men's chorus groups in the country. Between his time with the Great Northern Union Chorus and, a group he created with his friends, CHORD SMASH!, Perau has sung with many talented singers.

Now, he wants to bring that experience to the Red Wing area, creating a men's chorus.

Perau, who has taught at Red Wing High School for three years as a choir director, said the closest groups for people in this area are in the Twin Cities or Rochester. Perau believes that male singers in this community will jump at the opportunity.

"I'm just really passionate about men's chorus singing and since I've moved to the Red Wing area, I thought that men's chorus in this community could be really cool," Perau said.

The men's chorus needs at least 12-15 members to be viable, with registration now currently open. Perau said the group is looking for men ages 14 and up, with no prior music experience necessary.

The cost is $25 per person to cover various fees.

The music selection will be dependent on how many men are registered, according to Perau. However, Perau said they will focus on standard men's choral music.

"We want to pick music that's going to make everybody feel good and confident about what they're doing," Perau said.

Perau said he wants the group to be "light and fun," having the opportunity to share a passion for music with the community.

The first rehearsal is set for June 5 at the First United Methodist Church of Red Wing. All rehearsals will be held at the church, including the eventual concert on July 22.

Perau's group CHORD SMASH! will perform at the concert as well.
