Time to get Free

Local indie-pop or classic rock music lovers along with proud Red Wing patrons will be treated to a one-of-kind opportunity when Free Energy comes to town next week.

The band is built up of Minnesota talent including Red Wing High School graduates Paul Sprangers on lead vocals along with brothers Scott Wells, on lead guitar, and Evan Wells, on bass. Other members include Nicholas Shuminsky on drums and Sheridan Fox on guitar.

You can hear Free Energy perform for an exclusive free show 8 p.m. Thursday June 20 at the Central Park Band Shell, sponsored by the YMCA and Red Wing Shoe. See them also 10 p.m. Friday June 21 at the Harbor Bar.

After releasing their first album "Stuck on Nothing" in 2010 under the independent label DFA Records based out of New York, band members have had hits like "Bang Pop" played consistently on Twin Cities-based public radio including 89.3 the Current and the song was used on a pilot episode of the sitcom "Raising Hope."

That record spawned nearly two years of solid touring and a pile of accolades including being named one of the best bands in 2010 by Rolling Stone magazine.

Now based in Philadelphia, Free Energy released their second studio album "Love Sign" in January.

Much like its predecessor, the new record flirts with hysteria-inducing pop songwriting and classic rock production.

Tracks like "Electric Fever," "Hey Tonight" and "Girls Want Rock" demonstrate the band doing what it loves - condensing handclaps, harmonies, fist-pumping choruses, and lazer-guided guitar

Ultimately, Free Energy occupy their own interesting niche. Are they an indie rock band? A classic rock band? A power pop band? Even the band isn't sure.

"I wish someone would tell us what we are," says Sprangers, "because we've been described as everything."

"When I think of great songs by Peter Gabriel, or Tom Petty, I hear them almost like hymns. They speak to something greater than ourselves. Even the simplest rock music songs about partying and girls can be transcendental," he goes on to say. "I hope people can relate to what we do on some level. I hope kids like it. I hope moms like it. I don't care about being cool, I just want to connect."

This will be the first time Free Energy has come to perform in Red Wing.
