YMCA aims to raise $200,000
Red Wing Family YMCA quietly kicked off its annual campaign just before Election Day, but things are ramping up. Volunteers are out and about putting the personal touch on funding requests to everyone from moms groups to corporate offices.
The "Y" is missing from some promotional materials, and volunteer Joe Goggin said he loves the _MCA message.
"The 'Y' comes from you," Goggin said.
The overall goal is to raise $200,000, including $50,000 from banner partners; a business donates to the YMCA and gets its name on a banner -- which hang in the YMCA's gyms, pool rooms and hallways -- in exchange.
"Most of it goes to scholarships," Katie Hardyman said. She and Goggin serve on the same campaign team.
Roughly 25 percent of money raised will go toward programming and facility maintenance, but the focus is on what they call the access portion of the campaign.
"Everyone in the community understands the value of the Y," Hardyman said, listing off swimming lessons, Camp Pepin, youth sports, senior programming and more.
"What they don't know is the need," she added.
One in five people you see in the Y on a given day receives scholarship aid. And every one of the 5,015 members has to pay something toward their membership.
Even then, some years there isn't enough money. In 2010, 30 campers were turned away, Goggin noted.
No donation is considered too small. Levels of giving start with $1 to $119 in the Strong Families Club. They go up to the $10,000 Champions Club.

"Everyone in this community is touched by the Y," Hardyman said.
And most of those on scholarships are children. In 2011, nearly 2,000 youths participated in some type of Y program.
