Wrestling: Zumbrota-Mazeppa 5th at Maple River
The 10th-ranked (1A) Zumbrota-Mazeppa wrestling team finished in fifth place out of seven teams at the Maple River Invitational Saturday in Mapleton, Minn.
The Cougars finished with a team score of 59. Winning the team title was No. 6-ranked (3A) Albert Lea with 215.5 points. Maple River (133) and Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland (87) rounded out the top three.
Mitchell Watkins, Dillon Downes and Shane Bode each took first place for Z-M in their respective weight classes. Watkins clinched the 138-pound title with a 7-2 decision over Albert Lea's Derek Samudis, while Downes secured a pinfall victory in 1 minute, 25 seconds in the 170-pound title match against Maple River's Lukas Trio. At heavyweight, Bode secured first place with a pinfall over Albert Lea's Jacob Kunkel at 1:07.
At 195 pounds, Evan Block notched a third-place finish for Z-M, pinning New Ulm's Lorenzo Hernandez in 1:26.
The Cougars return home Thursday for a Hiawatha Valley League dual with Kasson-Mantorville. The KoMets are ranked second in Class 2A and 17th nationally.
