Wrestling: Z-M wins East Ridge Ruckus
Zumbrota-Mazeppa won the East Ridge Invitational with a score of 192.5, seven points ahead of second-place Waconia.
Joey Majerus won the championship at 120 pounds, beating Stewartville’s Tanner Prochaska by fall in 1 minute, 30 seconds. Majerus also won his first match by fall, and won his semifinal match, 9-6, over Waconia’s Justin Schultz.
Dillon Downes nearly matched Majerus, but fell just short in a 7-5 loss to Hastings’ Stuart Mattison in the 160-pound finals, a result that was familiar to 220-pounder Seth Tupper. Tupper lost a 9-2 decision to Rogers’ Jordan Lemcke in the championship match.
Devin Manzy captured third place with a pin of Winona’s Jake Timm. Manzy lost his semifinal bout against eventual 152-pound champion Owen Hemze of Waconia.
Evan Block’s 1-0 win over Eden Valley-Watkins’ Jack Schliesman got the Cougars a second third-place finish, this time at 220 pounds.
Two Z-M grapplers took fourth place, including Maverick Jackson at 126, and Shane Bode at 285.
Jacob Bennet finished fifth at 132, the same as 138-pounder Hunter Smith, and 145-pounder Caden Steffen. Noah Prodzinski (170) and Hunter Prodzinski (182) also claimed fifth-place finishes.
Wayzata (135.5), Rogers (133.5) and Stewartville (127.0) rounded out the top five in the 16-team field.
The Cougars will next head to Lakeville South for a triangular that also includes Henry Sibley. Z-M will have those duals starting at 5 p.m. Thursday.
