Wrestling: Goodhue splits home triangular
Wrestling’s opening day was nearly a great one for Goodhue. But the Wildcats were nipped by St. Charles in the nightcap of a home triangular Friday night.
Goodhue started the day by slamming La Crescent, 55-12. The Lancers won at 106 pounds before Kaleb O’Reilly and Joel Gadient received forfeits to put the Wildcats ahead for good.
Bailee O'Reilly earned Goodhue’s first on-the-mat win with a 12-4 major decision over Pedro Lopez.
Garett Huemann then got a decision at 138 while Logan Breuer followed with a 5-3 win
At 152, La Crescent’s Thor Sandven beat Riley Huemann before teammate Cole Flannery pinned Casey Deneen.
Matthew Deneen, Charles Dahling and Zach Scott all followed with forfeit victories for the Wildcats. Goodhue’s Ben Ramboldt then defeated Tom Wieser, 2-0, at 220, while heavyweight Josh Dahling received a forfeit.
Against the Saints, Goodhue fell in a 9-0 hole before staking an 18-9 lead on the strength of pins from Gadient and O’Reilly, and a forfeit for Matthew Lexvold.
St. Charles won the next two matches by decision, leading to two more pins from Riley Huemann and Casey Deneen. After a Saints pin and a Charles Dahling forfeit win, the score stood 36-21 in favor of the Wildcats. But three straight wins, and two pins, tied the score. The Saints won on the second tiebreaker with eight match wins to Goodhue’s six.
The Wildcats (1-1) will head to the Winona Invitational Saturday.
