WISC mines recognized for green practices
Wisconsin Industrial Sand Co. has been designated a Green Tier business by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, a first for a mining company.
WISC was recognized for its efforts to reduce the environmental impact of three mining and processing facilities in Maiden Rock, Bay City and Menomonie.
The company has worked to control energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and has reduced water consumption at its three mines by 50 percent, WISC said in a press release.
Green Tier is a voluntary program set up by the Wisconsin DNR to reward companies that go beyond state environmental and safety requirements. WISC, one of the biggest sand-producers in Wisconsin, is a subsidiary of Fairmount Minerals from Chesterland, Ohio.
