Spring officially starts today, but it didn't look like it Monday when a late-season snow storm swept through the region.

An inch of snow was recorded at the Red Wing Waste Water Treatment Plant at 7 a.m., with an additional 1.2 inches recorded throughout the day.

Red Wing public schools closed two hours early over concerns of snow accumulation and increasing winds throughout the afternoon. The school district then had a two-hour delayed start Tuesday morning.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation issued a driving advisory for U.S. Highway 61 for most of Monday afternoon and evening, warning of difficult driving conditions, icy patches, blowing snow and reduced visibility.

The sun was shining by 5 p.m. Monday, but strong winds blew gusts of snow across highways, obscuring road markings.

The National Weather Service is forecasting sub-freezing temperatures for the rest of the week.
