Wildlife, nature call
Two artists exhibiting work at Crossings through the month of May say they are inspired by the flora and fauna of the natural world.
Foxfeather enková describes herself as "a bird nut," while Jane Marie Lewis has always enjoyed the outdoors and beauty of the Mississippi River Valley.
The Minnesota native's paintings - and enková's mixed media pieces - are on display through Friday May 31. A reception will be he 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday May 11.
enková's business, Foxloft Studios, grew out of a love of animals, artwork, and conservation - a sincere passion for connecting people with nature.
"My dream," she said, "is to combine these things in a hybrid art studio, working farm, and eco-retreat; a place where people can come together to learn to produce food without the use of fossil fuels or chemicals, practice creative arts in a beautiful natural setting, and connect with animals and what it means to be a part of this greater system."
Her artwork is a combination of wildlife and fantasy. Works on display include pieces from her "Yin-Yang Dogs" and "Animal Stacks" series.
Lewis grew up in Lake City and now lives in Red Wing.
"Although I'm influenced by nature, my aesthetic is to capture color, light and shadow, boldly or subtly. I'm fond of a variety of mediums for drawing and painting but watercolor is my most common choice," she said.
Grateful for the natural beauty of her surroundings, Lewis said she also appreciates living in a region full of talented artists: They influence her work and she learns from them. She continues to experiment, develop and study art.
The exhibit and reception are free. People may view the exhibit during regular hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Crossings is located at 320 East Ave., Zumbrota. More at www.crossingsatcarnegie.com.
