Wabasha County Historical Society got confirmation last month that it has been awarded a $303,410 Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant for the Reads Landing School Exterior Rehabilitation: Construction Project.
The Reads Landing School is the oldest surviving brick schoolhouse in Minnesota. The funds will allow WCHS to restore and repair damaged windows and frames, install UV protectant storm sashes, repair the Italianate eaves assembly, repair, repoint and replace spalled bricks and repoint and clean the entire brick surface.
This grant was awarded, in part, due to the contributions made during the 2013 Wabasha County Historical Society Matching Fund Campaign, WCHS staff said. During this drive WCHS raised almost $40,000.
The restoration project will begin this spring and is expected to finish by fall.
