Red Wing native Marcus Warrington exceeded his own expectations at one of the biggest mountain bike races in the Midwest at the Subaru Cup July 14 in Mt. Morris, Wisc.

“I felt great,” he said. “I continued to get better throughout the race. I started off feeling pretty good and by the end of the race I was feeling fantastic.”

Warrington placed 13th in the Category 1-Elite race and took fifth in the Male Junior 17-18 year-old division. He finished the race, with little more than 5-kilometer loops, in 1 hour, 29 minutes, 53 seconds.

“It was actually pretty technical,” Warrington said. “It was the most difficult course I’ve ever raced on. It was very rocky and a lot of steep hills and sharp descents. It was a pretty short loop. Normally, those mountain bike races are four-to-six miles long (per loop).

“You get to know the course a lot better so by the end of the race, you have it dialed down a lot more. It does get a little exhausting having to do it so many times.”

Warrington, who will be a junior at Red Wing High School in the fall, also was the Midwest Regional champion as the fastest biker from the Midwest less than 18 years old.

“That really meant a lot,” he said. “My goal honestly was to not get pulled from the race and not to get dead last. … You work so hard throughout the spring and summer; I put in a lot of hours. It’s not that prestigious but it’s nice to know that when you’re putting in all that time, getting that award is pretty nice.”

With the high finish, Warrington qualified for the USA Cycling Cross-Country Mountain Bike National Championships July 18-21 in Bear Creek Resort, Pa. Scheduling conflicts and price kept Warrington from participating this year but he said his goal is to return in the future.

“It’s a priority to get to it in the future,” Warrington said of nationals. “After this year, I think (mountain biking) is going to become a lot more of a priority.”

The next race for Warrington is the first race of the Minnesota High School Biking League on Sept. 8 at Salem Hills in Inver Grove Heights. His goal is to win the high school series races and qualify for the nationals again next summer.

“I feel like I’m there right now,” Warrington said. “The next month will just be a lot more training for it and just keeping the same fitness level I’m at right now.”
