About an hour after the polls closed, major media were declaring that Wisconsin's Republican Gov. Scott Walker had survived the recall attempt.

With 62 percent of precincts reporting statewide, at 9:45 p.m. Walker had 57 percent of the votes while Democratic challenger Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett had 42 percent.
