The Red Wing volleyball team is still waiting for a win after going 0-4 at the Farmington invitational on Saturday.

Opening tournament play against Brainerd, the Wingers rebounded after a 25-22 first-set loss to take Set 2, 26-24. The Warriors held strong in the third set, 15-12, to take the match. Sydney Book led Red Wing with nine kills, while Sara Kelly added seven kills and Olivia Brown had a hand in three blocks.

Things looked promising for Red Wing in the next round against Winona with a 25-20 first-set win. But the Winhawks dominated the next two sets, 25-7, 15-9, to clinch the victory. Sarah O’Keefe had four ace serves, and Book finished with three blocks.

The Wingers could not win another set on Saturday, falling in straight sets to Bloomington Kennedy (25-19, 25-20) and St. Charles (25-16, 25-19). Against Kennedy, Book and Taylor Steger each pounded six kills. In the final match, Book had her biggest output of the day with 11 kills, and Kelly chimed in with two aces.

“It was a tough day, all day,” said Red Wing assistant coach Kelly Norman. “We were slow and flat-footed. We have to figure out how to work through the mental parts of our game. When we get down, we need to fight and take advantage of winnable situations. It was nice to see some new players step into larger varsity roles.”

On Thursday, Red Wing takes on its toughest test yet as the Wingers play host to top-ranked (3A) Chaska. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
