Volleyball: Red Wing roughed up by Winona

Email

A couple of hobbled players turned a tough Red Wing volleyball season into something even worse Tuesday at Winona. The Wingers, who are winless in 13 matches, fell in three sets to the Winhawks, 25-2, 25-18, 25-14.

“Tonight we learned we need to work together as a team and transfer our work on fundamentals from practice to games. Tonight proved that there are many opportunities for each player to be a leader, both on and off the court,” said Red Wing assistant coach Kelly Norman. “We have a few players out because of injuries, which means we have different players with new roles. This is going to require additional effort, hard work and mental toughness. Hopefully as we enter our final few weeks, the girls can come together as a team and be competitive.”

Taylor Steger had a team-high three blocks and three kills. Sydney Book also had three kills to go along with two ace serves, which was the same number as Maddie Sonju.

The Wingers (0-13) will host Northfield Thursday, then take a week off before a road trip to New Prague.
