Volleyball: Red Wing nabs first win of year
After enduring 23 straight losses, the Red Wing volleyball team finally got its first victory of the season on Saturday.
Playing in the Eastview tournament in Apple Valley, the Wingers started 0-3. But in its final match of the day, Red Wing picked up a three-set victory over Patrick Henry, 25-15, 19-25, 15-7. As a team, the Wingers racked up 22 kills and 37 digs in the victory.
“Hopefully this weekend’s win will give us some confidence as we enter our final week of the regular season,” said Red Wing assistant coach Kelly Norman.
Opening the two-day tournament on Friday, the Wingers lost to Eden Prairie (25-3, 25-10) and Missota Conference rival Shakopee (25-4, 25-11). Then in its first match Saturday, Red Wing lost to Andover (25-14, 25-12) before picking up the win over Patrick Henry.
“This weekend was a great tournament to be a part of, lots of tough teams,” Norman said. “The scores from Friday night’s games weren’t pretty, but the girls played well. We just couldn’t finish a point.”
Coming off their first ‘W’ of the season, the Wingers (1-23) close out the regular season Tuesday against Chanhassen (16-9).
