In the second family showdown, Cannon Falls head volleyball coach Melissa Huseth continues to hold an edge over her sister, Jen Nerision, as the Huseth-led Bombers won a five-set thriller over Kenyon-Wanamingo, 25-20, 21-25, 25-15, 26-28, 15-10, Thursday in Kenyon.

“It was such a hard-fought game; it was bittersweet for sure,” Huseth said. “Many of our girls were coached by Jen, too, when she was a coach here. They wanted to win, but they don’t want to play against Jen.”

After dropping a heartbreaker in the fourth set, Cannon Falls got off to a fast start in the decisive fifth set. Opening with a 6-0 lead, the Bombers never relented as they secured the Hiawatha Valley League victory.

“The girls knew they had to come out strong with the serve,” Huseth said. “We were in the driver’s seat and continued to attack the ball.”

Carly Broze was Cannon Falls’ top hitter with 16 kills. Hailey Huseth put in a strong effort in the family affair, helping her mom’s cause with 10 kills, 21 set assists and three ace serves. Becca Vandenheuvel shored up the back row with 36 digs, and Lydia Franken quarterbacked the Bombers’ offense with 31 set assists.

“I knew it was going to be a great match; K-W has a good program,” Melissa Huseth said. “I knew it would be a hard-fought point-by-point match. During the break, the girls said, “Coach, we got this one,” and they had the confidence that they knew they could do it. … It really could have gone either way.”

Mara Quam finished with a team-high 14 kills for the Knights, while setter Meg Clark added 42 set assists in the loss. Audra Clark had a team-leading 15 digs.

Cannon Falls (5-1, 4-0 HVL) heads to the Jackson County Central tournament on Saturday, opening play against Windom, the ninth-ranked team in Class 1A.
