Volleyball: Bombers place 3rd at JCC
Playing against some of the top teams in the state, the Cannon Falls volleyball team took third place at the Jackson County Invitational Saturday in Jackson.
In pool play, the Bombers got a three-set win over previously-ranked Windom, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13, thanks in large part to Carly Broze and Hailey Huseth eight kills apiece. Cannon Falls took top honors in pool play with a 25-19, 25-19 victory over Red Rock Central. Becca Vandenheuvel had 18 digs in the back row, and Lydia Franken finished with 16 set assists. Huseth led the team with nine kills.
Down to the final three, the Bombers ran into a wall against host JCC. After winning the first set 25-20, Cannon Falls could not shake off the seventh-ranked (2A) Huskies, losing 25-11 and 15-10 in the final two sets. Broze was Cannon Falls’ top player with seven kills and two solo blocks in the loss.
Then, against third-ranked (1A) Minneota, the Bombers fell short, 25-9, 25-14.Vandenheuvel finished with 12 digs, and Lydia Franken finished with two ace serves and six set assists.
Cannon Falls (7-3) resumes Hiawatha Valley League action Tuesday at home against Kasson-Mantorville.
