UPDATED: Football: Class, section changes in 2012 will impact area teams

The MSHSL Board of Directors approved a collection of football sections and classes -- including a new class for the state's 32 largest schools -- for 2012 at its meeting Monday.

As part of the shake-up, Red Wing will no longer play in the same section as Northfield, New Prague, Austin or Winona.

Each of those schools will be moved up to Class AAAAA while the Wingers remain in Class AAAA.

Red Wing, along with fellow holdovers Albert Lea and Faribault, will be joined in Section 1 by Byron, Kasson-Mantorville and Waseca.

The KoMets are a traditional football power.

"It'd be foolish to say it's going to get any easier," Red Wing coach Matt Schultz said.

He squared off against Byron and K-M in the Hiawatha Valley League during his eight years as an assistant coach and head coach at Cannon Falls.

A list of where area schools will be placed, along with the other members of the section follows:

Section 4AAA: Cannon Falls, Columbia Heights, Concordia Academy-Roseville, Minneapolis Edison, Minnehaha Academy, St. Croix Lutheran and Minneapolis Roosevelt.
