Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway is investigating after five cars went off the tracks Sunday night near the Fairmount Minerals sand mine in the Village of Maiden Rock.

The cars all derailed upright and did not tip over, a railroad spokeswoman said. Four of the cars were empty and a minimal amount of sand was spilled.

The cars were in the process of being moved when they derailed, Fairmount Minerals area manager Jeff Himes said Tuesday.
