Track: Red Wing hosts first competition
The first meet was a long time coming for Red Wing, and Thursday finally gave Red Wing's coaches a chance to gauge how the boys and girls teams look this season.
"It was great to finally get outside," Wingers boys track coach Adam Nelson said. "It was nice to finally get a meet in."
Hosting a quadrangular for its home invite, Red Wing finished third behind New Prague and Farmington in both the boys and girls meets. The Trojans won the girls meet and the Tigers won the boys meet.
A couple Wingers got off to particularly good starts as Nick Connelly won the boys shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 3 inches and was third in the discus throw.
Emily Stegora won the girls 100-meter hurdles, taking a lead after the third hurdle and extending that lead all the way through the finish. She won with a time of 16.49 seconds and New Prague's Sydney Samson took second in 17.09. Stegora tied for second in the triple jump, took fourth in the 300 hurdles, crossing the finish line in 52.95 seconds, and was part of Red Wing's 4x100 relay team that finished second.
"Emily Stegora had a great night scoring in four events," Jesse Nelson said. "It was great to finally get a meet in."
In the 800, Elise Leise won a close race in 2 minutes, 25.54 seconds, besting second-place finisher Mikaela Algren, of New Prague, by little more than a second. Algren finished in 2:26.69.
"Elise Leise had an exciting win in the 800," Jesse Nelson said.
Lindsay Scribner took first in the 3,200, winning by more than 10 seconds with a time of 12 minutes, 34.24 seconds, and Amy Nemanich placed fourth in 13:04.39.
For the boys team, Darrick Jackson finished second in the 400 with a time of 53.19 seconds, barely behind Farmington's Tyler Lerbakken, who ran the race in 53.09 seconds.
Frank Drazkowski took fifth in the 100-meter dash and the 200 while Tyler Rea finished third in the 110 hurdles in 17.46 and also placed third in the 300 hurdles.
Aiden Winn ran steady races in the 1,600 (4:50.68) and 800 (2:08.08), taking second and third, respectively. Lucas Knowlton took second in the 300 hurdles in 45.10 seconds and second in the long jump. The boys 4x100 placed second in 47.21 seconds, were runner-up in the 4x200, third in the 4x400 and third in the 4x800.
Shayna Ramstad finished fifth in the 100 in 14.27 seconds. In the 200, Meta Buck was fifth and Annie Turcotte took sixth in 29.33 seconds and 29.74 seconds, respectively.
The Wingers' 4x200 girls relay team took fifth place while their 4x400 and 4x800 relays each placed third.
In the girls shot put, Red Wing's Macy Kelly, Jennifer Salter and Caitie Turcotte took third, fourth and fifth place, respectively. Kelly won the discus with a throw of 93-2.
