Track: Field events lead ZM to third-place finish at subsection meet

Byron won both the boys and girls 1A subsection 4 meet Tuesday in Medford.

The boys scored 267 points and beat out Pine Island, which scored 155 points, for first place. Zumbrota-Mazeppa took third with 119 and Cannon Falls finished fourth with 94 points.

On the girls side Byron scored 280 1/2 points and Pine Island finished second with 151 1/2 points. Cannon Falls placed third with 148 and the Cougars finished sixth with 50 points.

The top three individuals and top three relays advanced to the Section 1A , which will be held in Winona.

Lucas Ziemba and Sean Adams won field events for Z-M and Nathan Warneke won the 1,600 and the 3,200-meter race. Ziemba won the long jump, going 21 feet, 5 inches in the prelims and 20-6 1/4 in the finals. Adams won the triple jump with a leap of 41-4 1/2. Warneke won the 1,600 for the Cougars with a time of 4:47.68, nearly 14 seconds faster than Byron's Jacob Bieber. Warneke also won the 3,200 in a time of 10:17.54.

Ziemba also placed third in the 100 with a time of 12.2 seconds and ran a leg of the 4x200 relay with Adams, Quam and Ben Coady, which finished third in 1:37.64, behind Byron, who won and Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf.

Freddie Bormann, James Drettwan, Adam Krage and Nathaniel Rauen took third in the 4x800 for the Cougars with a time of 9:22.19.

Z-M's Maddie Lindhart won the discus with a hrow of 104-6 and placed second in the shot put with a toss of 32-4.

Colleen Owen advanced to the section meet in 100 with a third-place finish in 13.95. Owen also took fourth in the 200 in 28.65.

Cannon Falls' Paul Hernke got through to the section meet in the 200 with a third-place finish in a time of 24.06. Hernke won the 400 in 52.91 seconds. Z-M's Ben Coady placed second with a time of 54.07 and Cannon Falls' Alex Bultena took fourth in 55.68.

Cannon Falls' Emi Trost won the 1,600 in 5:23.58, nearly 33 seconds faster than Medford's Julia Gardholm, who finished second. Trost won by a wider margin in the 3,200 with a time of 11:41.90. Trost beat Gardholm by 1:05.William Rutter took third in the 110 hurdles in 17.73 seconds.

Cannon Falls' 4x400 relay team of Thomley, Maria Jenson, Danielle Hanson and Sveta Mason finished second to Pine Island with a time of 4:29.67 while the 4x800 relay team of Katherine Hoffman, Amber Edwards, Cara Edwards and Pranke took second with a time of 11:18.32.

The 4x100 relay team of Kelsie Beissel, Madasyn Hofstedt, Grace Rutter and Alli Hanson placed third with a time of 54.78 seconds and the 4x200 relay team of Beissel, Abbey Erlanson, Rutter and Hanson also took third in 1:54.83.

Thomley finished second in the 400 with a time of 1:03.25 to reach the section meet.

Katherine Hoffman took third in the 800 for the Bombers and Melissa Pranke finished fifth in 2:41.30. Amanda Anderson placed second in the pole vault, Nick VanWatermeulen took third in the pole vault. Thomley also had a third-place finish in the long jump.
