The Red Wing boys braved chilly temperatures to compete at the Farmington Invitational Tuesday afternoon. The Wingers placed fifth as a team with 67 points behind Rosemount (169), Farmington (133), New Prague (106) and Eagan (79).

After the 3,200-meter relay team took third, Lucas Knowlton got the Wingers on the top of the podium with a victory in the 110 hurdles. Knowlton’s time of 16.34 wasn’t just the best of the day, it was the best of all of Knowlton’s days.

“Early on Lucas Knowlton won the hurdles and that got us started on a good note,” said Red Wing head coach Tony Casci. “He’s a senior captain and het set a personal record by almost 0.5 seconds.”

The 800 relay team followed with a third-place finish, just ahead of Aiden Winn’s runner-up mark in the 1,600.

“Aiden Winn ran a 4:36, and it’s his first time this year in the mile, and he nearly broke his personal record,” Casci said.

Darrick Jackson got the Wingers back on top with a run of 52.15 in the 400, which was followed by Winn’s (2:05.43) fourth-place finish in the 800.

Omonte Bowens (24.51) took fourth in the 200 with George Nemanich (10:40.75) grabbing fifth in the 3,200. The 1,600 relay came in fourth.

Nick Connelly’s throw of 45 feet was good for third in the shot put while Tony Poss surprised his coach with a fifth-place triple jump of 38 feet, 11 inches.

“Tony Poss had a really big triple jump to get us some points that we weren’t expecting,” Casci said. “That was a big boost.”

While several of the jumpers and distance runners appeared to be in top form, the cold took its toll on the shorter races.

“With the weather the way it was, the distance events were more apparent. But the sprints and throws were not where they usually are,” Casci said. “But the jumps and distances went really well.”

The Wingers will be back in action next Tuesday with a home triangular against Farmington and New Prague.
