A number of programs either continued or snapped a long streak in 2009. A list of some of those streaks follows:
The Red Wing football team finished the season 0-9 for the second consecutive year. The Wingers' losing streak stands at 22 games. Their last victory came Sept. 28, 2007, when they beat Shakopee 13-7 on homecoming.
Red Wing's neighbor across the river, Ellsworth, also has posted back-to-back 0-9 seasons on the gridiron. The Panthers' last victory was a 38-13 win at New Richmond on Oct. 11, 2007. Ellsworth has gone 20 games without a win.
The Plum City football team has fared much better, winning 43 consecutive regular-season games. The Blue Devils' last in-season loss? Alma beat them in Plum City 20-19 on Sept. 2, 2005.
When the Pepin girls basketball team beat Elmwood 50-47 on Jan. 8 it was the Lakers' first victory since Feb. 8, 2005. The victory snapped a 72-game losing streak.
"It was just almost surprising," junior Samantha Lerum said of leading in the third quarter. "I didn't even realize it, almost like I couldn't believe it. So I just kept playing like we were down because that's all I really know."
By beating Holy Angels 3-0 on the road Oct. 9, the Red Wing volleyball team won its first Missota Conference match since Sept. 22, 2005.
The Red Wing boys soccer team won 3-1 at New Prague -- a school fielding a varsity team for the first time in 2009 -- on Sept. 10. It was the Wingers' first win in the Missota since Sept. 16, 2004. Red Wing's varsity program debuted in 2004.
