Tequila opens downtown
Miguel Guerrero can't seem to get away from Mississippi River towns. In the past, the Mexico-native owned a restaurant in Winona, Minn. And, he currently owns restaurants in La Crosse, Wis., and Onalaska, Wis.
On Aug. 4, Guerrero opened Tequila Mexican Restaurant — again, just steps away from the Mississippi — at 212 Bush St. in downtown Red Wing.
"I've always been around the Mississippi area," Guerrero said with a laugh.
But what really drew Guerrero — and business partners Edgar Maya and Maira Martinez — to Red Wing was its downtown, he said. In traveling from the La Crosse area to the Twin Cities, Guerrero would often drive through Red Wing.
"I had always thought about this area," he said.
The new restaurant will be the third Tequila Mexican Restaurant. The La Crosse, Wis., location opened 14 years ago, Guerrero said. The Onalaska, Wis., location opened six years ago.
Guerrero said he brought the same menu from those locations to the Red Wing restaurant. The restaurant will feature authentic Mexican foods that Guerrero said he grew up with: fajitas, carne azada, tamales, chile rellena, tacos and more.
"They can find any flavor," he said. "If they like spice, we can make it spicier."
That food — made from scratch using authentic Mexican recipes, as the Tequila website says — is what sets the restaurant apart from other Mexican eateries, Guerrero said.
"I'm not here to compete. Our food is very different," Guerrero said.
"We try to make it a little bit tastier."
Lunch dishes range from about $5 to $8; dinner dishes are about $8 to $15. Keeping prices reasonable is important, Guerrero said.
"We know that the economy is not good now," he said. "We want to try to have good deals."
Tequila also features a full bar with beer, wines and liquors.
Before the restaurant opened earlier this month, Guerrero and his co-owners spent seven months gutting and remodeling the space. They put in a new ceiling and redid the walls, flooring and bathrooms, Guerrero said. Though the space previously housed a restaurant, the old kitchen has been completely remodeled as well.
"We started from scratch," he said. "We did pretty much the whole space."
Now, the restaurant has deep orange walls that are lined with wooden booths that were specially made for the restaurant.
Guerrero said they were going for a "rustic, old Mexico" style.
Red Wing's Tequila employs seven to eight people currently, though Guerrero said he is looking to add staff in coming months.
