Fourth of July

Activities are planned throughout the region. Wanamingo celebrates all day, from pancakes to fireworks, with a parade at 2:30 p.m. In Red Wing, family activities get under way at 6 p.m. at Levee Park, where fireworks will be set off at dusk. Other places with fireworks: Ohuta Park in Lake City; over the athletic field in Wabasha; over Lake Pepin in Maiden Rock; at the Country Club in Hastings.

Cannon Valley Fair

Featured today at the Cannon Valley Fair will be parade at 11:30 a.m., harness horse racing at 1 p.m., an antique tractor pull at 4 p.m., and fireworks at dusk. Cannon Falls also has a July 4 tradition at 10 a.m. -- a patriotic singalong at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.

Harbor Bar

Sonny Ray plays Island and Latin music at 2 p.m., then Jambo performs his Jimmy Buffett Tribute at 6 p.m. at the Harbor Restaurant and Bar.

Florence history

Open hours are planned for visitors at the Florence Township History Center, located inside the rear entrance to the historic Florence Town Hall, which has been the center of local government since 1875.

On the first Saturday of July through October Friends of the Florence Town Hall will be on hand to assist visitors.

The history room originally was a kitchen used for community events held at the Town Hall. Items of local historical value are displayed. The organization also is presenting oral histories of township residents.

Voices of the Valley

The monthly Voices of the Valley on the Cannon Valley Trail will feature DNR forester Melissa Gerkin, archaeologists Rod Johnson and Paul Mielke, and Goodhue County Public Health representation Susan Brace-Atkins.

Jan and Merle Larson will show their reptile collection, Roger and Daniel Steinbrucker will bring racing pigeons, and Laura Coble will talk about birds. Music will be by Byron Pearson, a concertina player.

The seventh annual outdoor antique flea market sponsored by the Red Wing Collectors Society Foundation will be in downtown Red Wing. Tables and stands will be laden with all sorts of vintage items, but most especially Red Wing pottery and stoneware.

The event, a benefit for the Red Wing Pottery Museum, anticipates the annual Red Wing Collectors Society convention. The convention runs July 9-12; headquarters is Red Wing High School.

Falconer Vineyards
