Red Wing School Board voted 5-0 to approve hiring consulting firm Springsted Inc. to help the district with its long-range facilities planning.

"We felt that we need a game-changer in terms of who's leading this project," Supt. Karsten Anderson said of hiring Springsted.

Before the failed 2012 facilities bonding referendum, the district hired architecture firm DLR to study the current buildings and put together options for renovations. Now, DLR will work with Springsted and construction company Kraus Anderson on a new long-range plan for the district.

School Board members liked the idea of having separate construction, architecture and consulting firms working together.

"They're all separate legs," Board Chair Heidi Jones said.

The district will pay Springsted $15,000 to complete the assessment study; additional fees will be charged should the district continue to work with Springsted following the completion of the study.

Springsted's proposal outlines how staff and community input will be used in the planning process. Many people felt that the district didn't take the community's and staff's thoughts into account before the failed referendum vote.

"We need to do things differently than we did a year-and-a-half ago," Anderson said. "I think Springsted's proposal addresses those things."
