Special carts may be legalized

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Village Board will take up a proposed ordinance to allow modified golf carts on village streets.

Board members decided Monday to refer the idea to the Street and Sidewalk and Health, License and Welfare committees for further study. They will report back later in 2014.

The proposal, offered by Rock and Jackie Erlandson, is similar to one on the books in Prescott. It would allow people with physical disabilities to use what are known as “mobility devices” on village streets.

The devices are built on a modified golf cart chassis.

However, golf carts themselves are not permitted on village streets, and board members indicated they have no intention of changing that.

In referring the issue to the committees, trustees expressed the desire to make sure use is limited to disabled drivers and their vehicles. The sole purpose would be to help them get around the village.
