Sounds like summer ... and something more
Next Wednesday’s Concerts in the Park hosted by Red Wing Arts Association brings regional favorite and nationally recognized quintet Davina and the Vagabonds to Central Park.
The concert starts at 7 p.m. and after a brief intermission the show continues until 9 p.m.
Davina Sowers came to the state in 2005 with husband (and bass player) Michael Caravale. She traded Florida palm trees for Minnesota snow. The vibrant Minneapolis music scene has fed her creative energy, she said.
Dan Elkmeier on trumpet, Connor McRae on drums and Ben Link on trombone join Sowers and her husband to form the Vagabonds.
Their musical style is a fresh interpretation of old style.
Sowers said old blues and jazz recordings influenced her as a child.
“The rasp and the tonal quality put a twisted edge on those standards,” she says.
“Listening to Davina creates memories,” says Dan Guida, executive director of Red Wing Arts Association. “You’ll want to hear more, and more, and more.”
“When we set the schedule for Concerts in the Park, we select a variety of music genres so we can offer something for everyone,” Guida said. Davina and the Vagabonds is in a class all its own. Think of retro sound with Golden Age American music to produce ageless appeal to many generations, he said.
The music summer concerts are free. Edward Jones Group Red Wing is a co-sponsor of this show.
Don’t forget your chair or blanket.
In case of rain, the concert will be moved to First Lutheran Church, 615 Fifth St. W.
The Concerts in the Park occur Wednesdays each summer at the Central Park Band Shell. There is no charge. The schedule for 2014 can be found at www.redwingartsassociation.org.
Red Wing Arts Association is committed to a focus on promoting the arts and support of the creative community in Red Wing and the surrounding area.
