Softball: Z-M runs wild in sixth, crushes Goodhue
Holding a comfortable 6-2 lead over a scrappy Goodhue squad, Zumbrota-Mazeppa started getting some runners moving in the top of the sixth inning. By the time the top frame was done, the Cougars put up 17 runs, turning a tight game into a blowout with a 23-2 Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division victory Tuesday in Goodhue.
Carley Henning went 3-for-3 for Z-M with a solo home run, four runs and two RBI. She also pitched three innings, striking out four in the win.
Hailey Dykes added two hits, two runs and two RBI, and Tayler Mort was 2-for-4 with a run for the Cougars.
Laurie Pearson was strong in 3 1/3 innings in the circle for Goodhue until she was knocked out of the game after getting hit by a line drive. Then when the game got into the sixth, problems snowballed for the underdog Wildcats.
"Things got a little out of hand," said Goodhue head coach Chris Irvin. "A couple errors, a lot of walks and some hits. When you give a team like that some extra outs, it's tough to get out of the inning, and they can run them up quick.
"That was one of the best-hitting lineups I've seen from Z-M in a few years."
Ashlyn Stecklein was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Goodhue, while Caitlin Strusz and Brittney Ryan each went 1-for-2 with a run scored in the loss.
Goodhue hosts Stewartville on Wednesday, while Z-M hosts Byron and Pine Island for a triangular.
