Softball: Wingers nab first Missota win since 2011

For the first time in nearly three years, Red Wing picked up a Missota Conference victory. The Wingers crushed Northfield, 18-8, in six innings. It was the Raiders that fell victim to Red Wing on May 18, 2011, the last league win for the Wingers.

Hailey Kuhl went 3-for-5 with a two doubles while Emily Boxrud was 4-for-5 with two doubles. Rebecca Swenning and Mary Bender each had three hits with Swenning adding three runs. McKenzie Cota had four hits with Molly Goranson adding two hits, including a triple.

“We did a great job hitting with people on base,” said Red Wing head coach Jon Bombach. “ It was almost contagious for a bit. It seemed like no matter who was up there, we got a hit. They had a couple errors, which compounded it, but it was a lot better than the first night.”

Boxrud pitched all six innings, allowing six earned runs while striking out four batters and walking two.

Red Wing (1-1) will head to Chanhassen on Tuesday, then head home to face Shakopee on Thursday.
