Softball: Goodhue ousted in first round

Goodhue put together a three-run seventh inning, but it came too late to save the season as the sixth-seeded Wildcats fell 9-4 to No. 3 seed Chatfield in the Section 1A-East playoffs Monday in Chatfield.

The Gophers’ lead was just 3-1 after three innings before they scored two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings each.

“Three of those runs in the fifth and sixth innings were unearned,” said Goodhue head coach Chris Irvin, who saw his team commit six errors on Monday. “Looking back, we would have been right there with them if we could have stopped those runs.”

A bright spot for the Wildcats came from junior Lexie Kennedy, who hit a solo home run in the second inning as she had two of the team’s three hits. Ashley Thompson had the team’s other hit.

On the rubber, Laurie Pearson took the loss in a complete game. She struck out two, walked one and gave up six runs and 10 hits.

“That was one of her best games in a while,” Irvin said of Pearson’s performance. “She showed a lot of focus and she deserves a lot of credit for keeping us in the game.”

Chatfield’s Janessa Erding went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, and Megan LaPlante was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs in the victory.

Goodhue ends the season at 4-15 overall.
