Softball: Cougars beat Bombers in 13 innings
Going 13 innings with Cannon Falls on Friday, hits were hard to come by for Zumbrota-Mazeppa. But thanks to some heads-up base running from Tayler Mort, the Cougars were able to sneak by the Bombers for the 1-0 extra-inning victory.
With Mort on second base, Cannon Falls caught a fly ball that had the Bombers’ fielder run into the fence. Amid the calamity, Mort raced around the bases to score the game’s lone run.
Cannon Falls lost despite a strong performance from pitcher Lydia Franken, who allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out 13.
“Franken was tough. The first time through the order, she struck us out seven times in a row,” Z-M head coach Kevin Nelson said said.
Carley Henning and Morgan Olson provided the Cougars’ only hits. On the rubber, Olson got the win for Z-M after striking out seven while allowing seven hits and a walk.
The Bombers’ seven hits – all singles – were split up among seven players.
