Jumpstart friends

Jumpstart children are talking a lot about family and who they love. They made heart collages, hand heartprints and had a blast putting on a Valentine’s Day party. The children were able to exchange valentines. The chidlren practiced signing “I Love You” and made a recipe for “A Happy Heart.”

Preschool 2

Mary Ann’s friends read a lot of Valentine’s Day books. They talked about being a good friend and practiced nice touches. Colors, shapes and numbers were reviewed and incorporated in daily activities. They had a Valentine’s Day with special treats and activities. The children are hoping for some warmer weather next week so they can spend time outdoors.

Preschool 1

Preschoolers in Karmen’s room explored different learning activities on the computer. They read books to themselves and with the teachers. Items of interest this week were: the color red, hearts, number 2 and the letter Ii. They also made heart art, valentine bags and an I love you card. Rojo (red) was their Spanish word and also the number Dos (two). Since the weather was so frigid this week they also enjoyed playing with the parachute and tactile balance beam.

Red Cottage

Artfully created valentines

Red Cottage children celebrate Valentine’s Day a little differently. They have spent two weeks preparing artfully created Valentines with stamps, paint, stickers, glue, and Do-A-Dots. We have collected all of them in a special basket. During our celebration on Friday, we distributed them evenly (a division!) so every child could take some home. This kept Valentine’s Day about thoughtfulness and friendship.

Valentine’s Day

We discussed the origin of Valentine’s Day. A priest in Italy secretly married couples when marriage was banned by the ruler of the country. He was arrested and became a saint. We also looked at the places in the world where Valentine’s Day is celebrated.

Extended day

The snow has kept us very busy and very happy. The children participated in the “Red Cottage Winter Olympics” outside. They bobsledded two to a sled, completed a biathlon by hiking and throwing tennis balls at tree targets, and luged on a new sled track. Each team represented a country in the Olympics.
