His Kids preschool

3-4 preschool

The world of bugs and butterflies has opened up in our classroom. The science table is covered with bugs and magnifying glasses so students can identify the different types of bugs and see the life cycle of a butterfly.

Stories this week included "Ladybug Girl," by David Somar, "Bumblebee Boy," by Jackie Davis and "Big Bug Surprise," by Julia Gran. Children recited the song "Butterfly, butterfly, where are you?" while flying around the room with wings.

4-5 preschool

"Under the Sea" was the theme this week. Children explored the ocean and the big bodies of water around the world. The students learned about ocean animals -- such as crabs, sharks, whales and turtles -- and asked questions about how the animals breathe and what they eat. The topic gave the group some great conversation during the morning meeting.

Math was adding and subtracting with goldfish crackers. Stories included "The Curious Little Dolphin" by Ariane Chottin, "Moon light ocean" by Elizabeth Golding and "Coral Reef Hideaway" by Doe Boyle. The science table had objects to help teach the concepts of floating and sinking.

Summer classes

Summer learning continues through the summer at His Kids Child Care. The school-age program will start June 10. Students do plenty of activities -- building sand castles, running through the sprinkler and doing crafts -- but also keep up reading and math skills in a fun and non-school approach.

St. John's

Teacher retirement

A special service will take place at 10 a.m. June 9 at St. John's Lutheran Church for teacher Alice Danell in thanks for 38 years. Former students are invited to join the school children in singing "I Love to Tell the Story." Meet in the church at 9:30 for practice.

A potluck in Central Park at 11:30 a.m. will be followed by a program commemorating Danell's years in Red Wing. Former students and friends are compiling a scrapbook of memories for Mrs. Danell. Anyone willing to share a memory may send it to Janet Gehlhar at jgehlhar@bevcomm.net.
