Sunnyside School

Walking Wednesday

On May 1, 20 students participated in Sunnyside Sneaker program. Winners were Elaina Borgschatz, Mrs. Bjork first grade and Noah Bethke, Ms. Maki first grade.

Kindergarten Town Tours

Kindergarten classrooms will tour White Rock State Bank, McDonald's, Target and have lunch at Colvill Park.

Baseball

Minnesota Twins Day promotion will be celebrated during lunch Friday May 10, so students are invited to wear Twins gear. All students who eat school lunch can sign up for a drawing to win a pair of tickets to watch the Twins play the Red Sox at 1:10 p.m. Sunday May 19 at Target Field.

PAC

The final elementary Parent Advisory Meeting will be 11:30 a.m. Friday May 10 at Burnside School.

Red Cottage Montessori

Many skills

A quilt project for older children combined small-motor, pattern and multi-step lessons.

Extreme weather

Red Cottage children saw a glimpse of spring at the beginning of the week wearing shorts and sandals. However, they had to dress in winter gear to run their school garage sale Friday.

Math

Children focused on mathematics this week. The younger children counted quantities for the first time while older children added small numbers on the addition strip board to make groups of 10, 12 and 14. Our oldest child began adding numbers on the large bead frame using exchanging (regrouping) into the millions. He had many interested observers whenever he took this work out.

Extended-day

Extended-day children explored new beaches along Hay Creek and hiked to where the city was fixing the sink holes on Hay Creek Valley Road. Tori, the R.E.A.D. dog, listened to each child read two books on Wednesday. He is a wonderful listener and each child snuggled right in.

PTO officers

PTO officers were elected for the 2013-14 school year: President Val Hofius, Vice President Pam Klatt and Secretary/Treasurer Lora Price.

School news

The photo in the park will be taken Monday. Teacher Appreciation Week has been bumped to May 13-16. Students in K-2 delivered May baskets to residents in the Downtown Plaza and Jordan Towers. Costume information for "The Saga of Dead Dog Gulch" came out in Wednesday's Herald.

Science class

Mrs. Gayle Krause taught grades 1 and 2 in Mrs. Danell's absence. Students are enjoying a study of the human body in science classes.

Little Blessings

Little Blessings Preschools will sing in church May 5. They are studying the story of Daniel in the lion's den.

Kindergarten

Kindergartners are learning about coins. They have talked about pennies, nickels and dimes. Plants are the discussion in science.

Grade 5

Math students are finding the volume of cylinders and prisms.

Grades 6-8

Grades 6-8 broke into groups and began constructing series and parallel circuits as they learn about electricity in science classes. They have finished reading "Tuck Everlasting" and are now working on final projects for the book.

Red Wing High School

AP Testing

Students will be completing their AP exams beginning May 6. Testing occurs on the schedule established by the College Board and takes place over a two week period of time.

Summer School

Students needing credit recovery classes should contact their counselor for a summer school application. Summer school will run from June 10 to July 3. Classes begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 12:45 p.m.

Colvill Kids

Colvill Kids 3's

Miss Katie's classes are reading "Does a Kangaroo have a Mother Too?" by Eric Carle. The will discuss and learn about the vocabulary words "kangaroo, penguin, dolphin, swan, giraffe and mother."

This week's early math curriculum will include a matching game of baby and mother animals, and the children will sort land and water animals. The children will be making a class book about mothers.

Colvill Kids Mixed Ages

Ms. Lila's classes will be talking about life on a farm. The classes will read "Big Red Barn" by Margaret Wise Brown. During the week, the farm theme will continue with the children painting a big red barn, pudding painting a pig and graphing favorite farm animals. For language arts, the children will be working on the letter Zz.

Colvill Kids 4's

Miss Catie's classes are reading "Old Black Fly" by Jim Aylesworth. Students will make their own page from the book. Language arts will focus on the letter Uu with Umbie Umbrella. The color of the week is black, and the children are encouraged to wear something black Thursday or Friday.
