School district elevates planning process
The five-year strategic plan proposed April 4 was approved 7-0 by the Red Wing School Board Monday night. The plan will be rolled out April 25 at the scheduled staff development day.
A few changes were made to the plan proposed two weeks ago. A fifth improvement focus area - professional development - was added to the original four: curriculum, interventions, culture and behavior and teacher and administrator effectiveness. Also, language referring to specific legislation was removed because there have already been many changes to the proposed bills.
"This truly does lay a framework for us to begin moving forward," Curriculum Director Kathy Radmer said.
This is the first time the district has had a strategic plan in place. "I think it's time," Board member Dennis Porter said.
"I am very encouraged that we have been very specific in outlining goals," Chairwoman Heidi Jones said.
In addition to the strategic plan, the board also voted to keep two teachers, Jillynne Raymond and Brian Cashman, on special assignment throughout the 2011-12 school year. Their duties will be to continue to research and help implement some of the improvement plans. This will cost the district just under $115,000 in salaries, which will be covered by funds from a federal Edujobs grant and from revenue made from increased enrollment.
"It just takes people to keep this moving," Supt. Stan Slessor said.
Lastly, the board approved a method and formula to evaluate principals.
