School Board votes to increase salaries
With a unanimous vote, the Red Wing School Board increased salaries for 2014 by $500 for directors and the chair.
Annual salaries for directors are were raised to $2,000 and the chair will be paid $2,700.
The board tabled the approval at the last meeting to allow for further research and comparison of other districts in the county as well as schools from the Big Nine Conference and the Missota Conference.
The change brings board members’ compensation to the median salary paid by neighboring districts and districts of comparable size to Red Wing.
Board member Steve Anderson said he didn’t run for School Board for the money, but he wants to make sure the compensation is enough to draw people to the position.
The last election there were four openings on the board and only four people ran for the positions, Steve Anderson said.
“I don’t want to get in by default,” he said. “I want to get in because I’ve earned it.”
With the amount of time and number of different meetings and committees required of board members, paying on a per-meeting basis was also discussed.
Goodhue School District pays its board members $45 per meeting instead of having an annual salary.
Supt. Karsten Anderson said the election in November should prompt the board to take a good look at compensation and time commitments so anyone interested in running can get a good idea of what they’re getting into.
No numbers were put forth as to how a per-meeting compensation plan would work and board member Mark Ryan expressed some concern about moving from an annual pay rate.
“I think the per-meeting (payment) is a pit you can get yourself buried in very easily,” he said. “I think the flat rate will serve us best.”
The clerk’s compensation will remain unchanged from previous years at $1,000.
