School Board evaluates itself
Twice a month, the Red Wing School Board meets as a whole to discuss issues facing the district. But it's not very often that the board gets to step back and evaluate itself.
On Monday evening, the seven members -- and Supt. Karsten Anderson -- got to do just that. The group spent more than three hours discussing where the board is, how board members are working together and what could be done in the future to improve board practices.
The session, which was part of the board's quarterly workshop, was led by Ted Blaesing, a former White Bear Lake, Minn., superintendent. He was recommended to the district by Springsted last year.
"It is important for any board to take time to reflect on where they are and where they are going," Board Chair Heidi Jones said of Monday's training.
"We want to enhance our performance as a board by exploring best practices and developing operating norms," Anderson said.
Blaesing began the session by asking board members the question "If the Red Wing School District were a vehicle, what kind would it be and why?"
He also had board members describe their first car. The purpose, Blaesing said, was to allow board members to get to know each other better.
"You come together to function as School Board members, and many times you really don't know a lot about each other," he said. "Hopefully you can use that as a starting point from time to time and just learn more about yourselves."
Anderson said the board went on to discuss how the board can work more efficiently in the future and ways to improve their current practices.
"The board identified a desire to have more informational discussion meetings," Jones said.
In the coming months, the board will work to make adjustments to its current procedures, Anderson said.
"Everyone can improve their performance, and we hope to lead by example," he said.
