Schafer wears Miss Goodhue crown
When Kendra Schafer was younger, she always looked up to Miss Goodhue.
"I thought she was so cool," Schafer said.
Now, the 17-year-old is standing in that spotlight. Schafer, the daughter of Brandon and Monica Schafer, was crowned Miss Goodhue for 2013 during the Miss Goodhue Pageant Friday evening.
"My heart was pounding out of my chest," Schafer said of just before the crown was placed on her head. "I still can't believe it. It's surreal."
Schafer will represent Goodhue at parades and events throughout the region over the next year. Joining her will be Princesses Mikayla Tipcke and Mikayla Miller, who were also crowned Friday. Angie Stehr was named Miss Congenialty.
Outgoing Miss Goodhue Alyssa Pasch and Princesses Nicole Hinsch and Diann Ramboldt were on hand to help crown this year's royalty.
Pasch also gave her farewell address during the ceremony.
"I've been so honored to be Miss Goodhue," she said, likening the town to a family. "People are always willing to lend a helping hand."
Pasch advised the new royalty to continue "making ripples" as they represent Goodhue over the next year. Schafer, Tipcke and Miller will get their first chance to do so as they ride in the Volksfest Parade Saturday.
Looking forward, Schafer said she is most excited for the chance to "connect with younger girls," and inspire them the same way former Miss Goodhues inspired her.
"(I want to) help get them on the right path," she said.
Also crowned at the Friday evening ceremony were 2013 Volksfest King and Queen Arnie and Linda Breuer. Carol Opsahl was named parade grand marshal.
