Richard Schulenberg, 69

Richard "Dick" Chester Schulenberg, 69, of Red Wing, died unexpectedly on Monday, July 8, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Red Wing.

He was born Oct. 11, 1943, in Red Wing, to Chester and Renota (Bohmbach) Schulenberg. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1961 and then attended St. Cloud State. Following college, he worked at Bay State Milling and Burlington Northern Railroad before he began his career as a counselor at the Minnesota Correctional Facility. In 1973, he was married to Linda (Jacques) Rivard, and they later divorced. Dick worked at the correctional facility for many years, retiring in the 1990s due to a disability.

He was a member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54 and had been in the National Guard as a young man. Dick greatly enjoyed music and collecting records and for a time had his own DJ service, “Big Dog Dick's.” In his spare time he loved fishing, sports of all kinds, his dogs, and going to the dog track.

He is survived by his children, Lisa (Chad) Walker of Welch, Dustin (Angie) Schulenberg of Red Wing, and Shawn Schulenberg of Huntington, W.V.; grandchildren, Alek and Taylor Schulenberg; brother, Dr. Robert (Nancy) Schulenberg of Red Wing, and sister, Delma (Roger) Deden of Red Wing; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his Goldendoodles, Yogi and Fonzi.

He was preceded by his parents and those that are waiting for him at the Rainbow Bridge, his loving pets: Bo, Muffy, Brandy, Cloudy, Tarpan, Cleo, Emmitt, Cocoa, Kirby, Warrior, Slick, Sam, Ziggy, Boo-Boo, and Tigre and Lucky (the cats).

A memorial service for Dick will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 26, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with Reverend Mark Kalb officiating. Visitation will be for 1 hour prior to the service. Memorials preferred to the Goodhue County Humane Society.
