Restaurateurs reap rewards
Red Wing residents will soon have two new options on the dining front, as the Red Wing Restaurant Challenge announced its two winners late afternoon on July 3.
Danielle and John Flicek won the grand prize with Phillip White coming in second place.
The Fliceks plan to reopen the Staghead Restaurant, 219 Bush St., and offer a handcrafted gastropub menu focused on healthful, locally sourced food with tap beers, craft beer, wine and espresso drinks.
Danielle and John Flicek have experience in the restaurant business and he has worked as a chef for 16 years including at Nosh in Wabasha and most recently at Z-Zest in Rochester.
Lifelong Red Wing resident White, along with wife Amelia, currently operate Phil’s Spot, a food trailer in Red Wing and are working to determine an exact location for their new restaurant, which will operate opposite the days of the food trailer.
The Whites plan to maintain an emphasis on locally sourced food with a farm-to-table concept.
Both winners will divide a total of $20,000 in cash and $20,000 toward equipment purchases, services and incentives offered by local businesses.
The Red Wing Restaurant Challenge, launched in April to help reinvigorate downtown Red Wing, was sponsored by Red Wing Downtown Main Street and the Red Wing Port Authority.
Five judges chose the two winners from a total of seven applicants.
