A man apparently enduring a crisis waded into the Vermillion River in Hastings on Wednesday afternoon.

At about 4:15 p.m., a caller reported seeing a man in the water just above the falls. Crews were dispatched immediately and got to work to rescue the man.

It appeared as though the man was considering  going over the falls. Onlookers urged him not to. Rescue personnel from the Hastings Fire and Rescue Department were doing the same.

Eventually, a rescuer was able to make his way to the man and grab hold of him to prevent him from going down the falls. Even then, the man resisted the efforts of rescue personnel.

Sharon Huppert was at the falls with her husband and saw the man in the water and called 911.

"We're just glad we saw him," Huppert said.

"You saved his life," an onlooker told Huppert.
